So this is what happens when I have too much free time …
Since moving to North Carolina and starting my new job, I’ve had a whole lot of free time.
This old TV tray has been staring at me for years. My husband had it for there’s no telling how long when I moved in and it’s age shows on its discolored and stained surface. It had seen better days.
A few years after I moved in, I bought some “nicer” TV trays and Derrick told me I could toss it (by nicer I really mean newer… and plastic…). For some reason, I just hung on to it. I never made plans for its resurrection, but it was one of those things I couldn’t, or rather wouldn’t, et go.
Fast forward five or so years and here I am, a new North Carolina resident with more free time than I could ever imagine, desire, or occupy. To put it in perspective for you, this time last year I was working on a research project as part of my assistantship (aka job) at USC, coaching gymnastics about 15-20 hours per week (preparing for competition season), waiting tables four or five days per week, writing my dissertation, applying for jobs, and trying to enjoy life as a newlywed. Yes, I planned a wedding, got married, and honeymooned while juggling all of it. Needless to say, I’m getting a bit restless with my one job. There’s just so much free time.
Yesterday, I was sitting on my couch and I could see just the top edge of the good old TV tray poking out from behind a shelf. That was it, I was inspired. I went and dug out my boxes full of art supplies and contemplated the trays future.
I am not lacking in the arts and crafts supply department. I was staring at a rainbow of acrylic paints, a variety of colored chalk paint, way too much puffy paint, an assortment of scrapbook paper and cardstock, and and embarrassing amount of washi tape (among a random collection of stamps, ribbon, ink, embossing tools, stained glass, etching creme,… as I said, not lacking.) I had purchased the chalk paint for something for my wedding but didn’t end up using it. So I decided what the heck, I’ll give it a whirl. Now the question was what to do with it.
So I love living in NC, but being here makes me appreciate the state that’s been my home for over a decade. I love SC and in some ways I feel like a traitor, abandoning my home state for its northern relative. A few months back I purchased a palmetto moon stencil that a nice guy from eBay custom cut for me (he can do anything, just shoot him a message and he’ll make you whatever stencil you want, it’s amazing.).
I figured that this TV tray that has been in my life for so long may just be the perfect way to keep a little tribute to SC with me.
A few hours later I was waiting on the last coat of white paint to dry. In one night I went from discolored and busted looking to this…
Your turn! Go make use of your free time and see what you can upgrade in your home. Then tell me all about it! I need all the ideas I can get for occupying my new found free time! Leave your favorite projects in the comments, I’d love to hear all about them!
